Why Does My Night Guard Make My Jaw Hurt?

Adjustment Periods vs. Poor Fit

Night guard jaw pain generally has one of two causes. Some mild discomfort during the first few days is normal as your mouth adjusts. However, if your night guard causes persistent jaw pain or headaches beyond that, it may be incorrectly fitted or too thick, disrupting your natural resting bite [1]. Over-the-counter boil-and-bite models are particularly prone to uneven occlusal surfaces.
